Three years, nearly twenty surgeries, and a lifetime’s worth of lessons later — I’ve been reflecting on what this journey has really taught me. I ended up writing two companion reflections: one zoomed in on the practical lessons of advocacy, and one zoomed out on the bigger mosaic of grief, identity, and gratitude. Together, they capture both the “how I’ve gotten through” and the “who I’m becoming along the way.” I’ve sat with these reflections for several weeks — part of me wanting them to be perfect, part of me not wanting to add too much all at once. I thought I’d have more to share in October, but inspiration took its time. I spent much of the month listening instead of producing — until the words finally poured out, just before a much-needed change of scenery. Maybe that’s how it goes: rest, reflection, then release.
If I’ve learned anything through recovery, it’s that nothing about this process is ever truly “complete.” I’ve hovered over the publish button more times than I can count — not because I doubt the words, but because they still feel alive. The truths keep shifting as I do. Maybe that’s the point: healing and meaning-making aren’t tidy. They’re living mosaics — imperfect, evolving, and true to where I am now. The Mosaic piece is nearly ready to share — a reflection of all that’s been stirring quietly beneath the surface. For now, here’s a look at what’s been unfolding this past month.
